Tensile Strength of Artificially Cemented Sandstone Generated via Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation

چکیده
Artificially bio-cemented sands treated with microbially induced calcite precipitation are weakly cemented rocks representing intermediate materials between locked and carbonate sands. Variations in cementation significantly affect the strength of sample, particularly tensile stregth. The modes fracture surface characteristics resulting from indirect tests (Brazilian tests) strongly correlated specimen consequently degree cementation. This study examines fine coarse (average particle diameter 0.18 1.82 mm, respectively) investigates failure by recording evolution at both sides reconstructed surfaces. dimensionless slope parameter Z2 provided best fit respect to while power spectral density was a good indicator anisotropy. Finally, wavelet decomposition allowed for comparison two ignoring grain size effects.

Sequestration of Radionuclides and Metal Contaminants through Microbially-Induced Carbonate Precipitation
Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), an emerging technology for soil improvement, also may be used to sequester (biomineralize) radionuclides and metal contaminants (e.g., 90 Sr 2+ , Cd 2+ ) in groundwater, a significant problem at some U.S. Department of Energy sites. Previous work using the bacterium Bacillus pasteurii suggests that in-situ sequestration of these contaminants c...
متن کاملBiotic and abiotic effects on CO2 sequestration during microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation.
In this study, CO2 sequestration was investigated through the microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process with isolates obtained from a cave called 'Cave Without A Name' (Boerne, TX, USA) and the Pamukkale travertines (Denizli, Turkey). The majority of the bacterial isolates obtained from these habitats belonged to the genera Sporosarcina, Brevundimonas, Sphingobacterium ...
متن کاملMicrobially Induced Calcite Precipitation Employing Environmental Isolates
In this study, five microbes were employed to precipitate calcite in cohesionless soils. Four microbes were selected from calcite-precipitating microbes isolated from calcareous sand and limestone cave soils, with Sporosarcina pasteurii ATCC 11859 (standard strain) used as a control. Urease activities of the four microbes were higher than that of S. pasteurii. The microbes and urea-CaCl₂ medium...
متن کاملThermodynamic Simulation of Carbonate Cements-Water-Carbon Dioxide Equilibrium in Sandstone for Prediction of Precipitation/Dissolution of Carbonate Cements
Carbonate cements, such as calcite, dolomite, ferrocalcite and ankerite, play important roles in the formation of pores in sandstones: precipitation of carbonate cements modifies pores and inhibits compaction, while dissolution creates secondary pores. This work proposed a precipitation-dissolution model for carbonate cements-CO2-H2O system by means of ion equilibrium concentration ([M2+], M = ...
متن کاملBiofuels: Microbially Generated Methane and Hydrogen
The production of methane (CH4) or hydrogen (H2) from renewable biomass by microorganisms growing anaerobically has the potential for contribution to independence from fossil fuels. Anaerobes function in Nature by converting biomass to CH4 through food chains comprised of fermentative and acetogenic species, which decompose the complex biomass to H2, formate and acetate that are further metabol...
